my court diaries- 1

city civil courts

being a final year law student our curriculum includes court visits, which means that we as students are supposed to visit the civil and criminal courts to observe the proceedings and imbibe the same.
january midweek we visited the city civil court at madina, close to the famed charminar.
a huge building consisting of several court rooms based on the hierarchy civil courts follow. the lowest being the junior civil judge/munsif courts, then the senior civil judge/sub courts and finally the chief judge/district court.each of them further divided into first senior civil judge, second senior civil judge so on and so forth!
a separate court called the family court to deal with matrimonial disputes, primarily divorce and maintainence.
the first day we enthusiastically went directly to the court room marked chief judge, considering it is the highest court in that building and therefore full of activity implying a whole lot of proceedings to observe!a futile visit indeed- we had empty benches to welcome us, a barely audible judge and a proceeding of sorts which seemed more like a private tete-a- tete!!!
i must mention here the lobby... a cursory glance of the lobby we were sitting in reminded me of a railway platform and the advocates of well the equivalent counterpart!!!amidst the laughter there was this sense of dismay that this is the kind of a setting that i may end up working in... a pitiable working ambiance indeed!
agreed that with the sheer numbers and the different backgrounds people come from it is probably difficult to maintain the courts, but what about basic amenities like say a washroom?
the first day when i wanted to use the washroom, i was told by some random clerk to approach another random office and ask the concerned clerk for the washroom keys.this she did cos looking at us she realised that we possibly are entitled for a better washroom than the one available to the general public.
so, highly pleased i approached the concerned clerk and asked her for the keys.had to negotiate with her a little since she was sitting on a really high horse! pleased that the mission was accomplished i unlocked the washroom.
how i wish i dint! it was the worst ever loo i saw.. worse than even the eerie, one bulb lit- dirty loos one finds when travelling by road[at the roadside dhabas].a dimly lit room, a very holy ;) wooden door, cobwebs not cleaned since Adams, leakages, water retention, terrible! quite an eventful first day

however the rest of the week we invariably found ourselves observing the proceedings at the family court. this was the only court which served the purpose of our court visits.
the judge was learned, experienced and extremely witty:) he would have us burst into peals of laughter with his witty one liners, subtle sarcasm and like my friend put it a smiling-from-the cheek face.probably realising our presence in the court room he stressed on the relevant sections and went that extra mile to make it as clear as possible for us. a truly delightful experience :)

the week coming to an end my friends and i left a little early to shop around the famed choodi bazar[ a dedicated bangles market] and locally made kholapuris and jootis[ again very Indian -colourful slippers made out of leather]:)

all in all an interesting and eye opening visit :)
